FUELING ICELAND’S FUTURE
WITH SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL FROM GREEN HYDROGEN
Icelandic hydrogen development company IðunnH2 is creating a commercial scale, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility on Europe’s renewable energy island, Iceland.
The team, site and project fundamentals position us for successful entry into a new and rapidly growing market for sustainable aviation fuel by 2027.
Our vision is to supply cost-effective, certified clean fuels to rapidly replace fossil fuels, for the benefit of Icelanders, our climate and our shareholders.
IðunnH2’s SAF production facility in Helguvík
IðunnH2’s commercial-scale synthetic fuel facility will be located in Helguvík Harbour near Keflavík International Airport which serves as a base for connecting the N-American and European markets. Feasibility has been established by the Cambridge-based consultancy Element Energy with support from the local firm Mannvit Consulting Engineers.
The Project will take 100% renewable energy off the grid through long-term PPAs with several power producers. Iceland’s baseload renewables allow for high utilisation rates of equipment, with capacity rates for hydropower, geothermal and wind among the world’s highest. Although power prices are competitive, transparency is limited with 80% of power sold though PPAs with industry. The experienced team at IðunnH2 has already secured power through MoUs with several producers.
The site is in a pre-zoned harbour area with excellent connections to markets and significant existing infrastructure. The project is being developed in full cooperation with the municipal authorities, airport operator Isavia, the Keflavík Airport Development Company, and the airlines that call Keflavík home.
What is sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)?
SAF is an umbrella term for several low-carbon options to conventional jet fuel that can be produced and blended with conventional jet fuel to use on existing planes and infrastructure. Increasing the use of SAF is one of the most cost-effective ways available to reduce emissions from aviation, which is why the EU includes a SAF blending requirement in its Fit-for-55 emissions reduction package. E-kerosene is a type of SAF produced by combining green hydrogen made from renewable power with existing CO2 from an industrial source or the atmosphere. If airlines are to reliably reduce emissions in an economically-effective and certifiable manner, e-kerosene should be produced at sites with access to low-cost certified renewable power, sustainable water sources and CO2.
